- Is QRL fairly distributed / decentralized?
- This page measures it directly. The top-N share shows how much of the supply the largest wallets control; the Gini and Nakamoto coefficients summarise concentration in one number each. Lower top-N share and higher Nakamoto generally mean a more broadly-held coin.
- What is the Gini coefficient?
- A 0–1 measure of inequality. 0 would mean every wallet holds exactly the same amount; 1 would mean a single wallet holds everything. Real chains sit somewhere in between — and tend high, because exchange and treasury wallets hold large balances.
- What is the Nakamoto coefficient?
- The minimum number of wallets that together control more than 50% of the supply. A higher number means control is spread across more parties (harder for a small group to dominate); a low number means a handful of wallets hold the majority.
- Why is so much supply in a few addresses?
- On most chains the largest balances are exchange hot/cold wallets, the foundation/treasury, and early participants — not a single owner. Concentration metrics treat these as individual addresses, so they can look top-heavy even when the underlying ownership is broader. Address labels (where known) help interpret this.
- What's a whale, a shrimp and everything in between?
- We split holders into six "ocean" tiers by each wallet's share of total supply, the same way explorers like Etherscan do. A whale holds ≥0.1% of supply on its own; each step down is 10× smaller — shark (0.01–0.1%), dolphin (0.001–0.01%), fish (0.0001–0.001%), crab (0.00001–0.0001%) and shrimp (below 0.00001%). The tier chart toggles between the number of wallets in each tier and the supply they hold: typically a swarm of shrimp holds only a sliver while a handful of whales hold the bulk.
- Are the top holders exchanges or real whales?
- Often exchanges, the foundation or staking/mining pools rather than single individuals — concentration metrics treat each address on its own, so labelled custodial wallets can look like whales. The Rich List (/qrl-rich-list) shows the largest wallets by name with their entity labels where known.
- Is the concentration getting better or worse over time?
- The "concentration over time" chart tracks top-10 share and Gini as a daily snapshot. Because it's a forward-only series, the trend fills in as more days are recorded — early on it shows "history building" rather than a misleading flat line.
- What is dormant supply?
- Coins in wallets that haven't transacted in a long time, bucketed by age. Deeply-dormant supply (years untouched) is often lost keys or long-term holders — effectively out of circulation. It's a useful lens on how much supply is realistically liquid.
- How is this different from the Supply page?
- The Supply page (/supply) answers how much QRL exists — the combined total across both chains, emission rate, and the migration split.
